What is Kiteboarding?
There is a sport that is like surfing, wakeboarding, and flying all at once. If you’ve ever been to Pismo Beach on a windy day, you will see over two dozen kiteboarders in the water or doing tricks high above it. Most of these riders are ordinary people that are simply addicted to this amazing extreme sport called kiteboarding.
Kiteboarding uses the wind to combine the aspects of surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and windsurfing into one extreme ocean sport. The kite, anywhere from 6-20 square meters, powers the rider through the water. The kite will have either 4 or 5 lines up to 27 meters long that connect to a control bar, which the rider pushes and pulls to control the kite in any direction. The bar hooks into the rider’s harness, which is most often worn around the waist. A board similar to a wakeboard or surfboard enables the rider to fly over the water. We carry Naish, DaKine, Slingshot, Neil Pryde, Caution, NPX, Starboard, Creatures of Leasure, Ocean and Earth, Werner, Garmin, AzHiAzIaM, MBS, and much more.
If you want to get into kiteboarding, the first step is a trainer kite. However, there are many things that you must take into consideration in order to purchase the right trainer kite. We have created a series of questions and answers that should help you pick out the perfect trainer kite!
Yes you do. If you are serious about learning to kiteboard, a trainer kite is going to save you a lot of money. If you go into your first kiteboarding lesson with experience using a trainer kite, you are going to progress unbelievably faster. Just 10-15 hours of trainer kite experience will help get shredding on a kiteboard much faster!
Most of our trainer kites are two to four meters. The smaller trainer kites are a fantastic place to start, but the larger kites (3 and 4 meter) will simulate the feel of a real kite a lot better. However, even with the bigger kites, the power generated depends on you. You can generate just as much power quickly flying a 2 meter kite as you can slowly flying a larger kite.
Trainer kites generally come with 2-4 lines. For example, the Slingshot B3 is a two line trainer kite and the HQ Kites Rush IV PRO uses a different three line system. Typically the smaller kites come with just 2 lines and the powerful kites (over 3m) come with 3 or 4 lines. For the most part, you will notice very few differences in performance based on the number of lines a kite has. However, if you think that tangling may be an issue a two line kite might be a better call. On the other hand, if you want an easier re-launch, we recommend going with a kite that has more lines.
Some kites come with a wrist safety leash. This is by no means a necessary feature, but can save you some trouble. With a leash, when you let go of the bar, the kite will drop to the ground, but it will still be attached to you. Without a leash, once you let go of the bar, the kite might travel further downwind and you will have to chase it down the beach.
Many trainer kites including the Slingshot B2 come with an instructional DVDs. These DVDs are not required to learn how to properly fly your trainer kite, but they will shorten your learning curve a whole lot.
Everyone has different needs in their trainer kite. For this reason there is no "best" trainer kite. We recommend that you consider some of the information above, and carefully select what kite you feel will best suit your needs. Also be sure to check out our featured trainers below:
